A few weeks ago, and Eidos introduced the first downloadable content for Tomb Raider Underworld. Entitled Beneath the Ashes, the episode tasked Lara with exploring the ruins beneath her destroyed manor. However, the brevity and the ease of the pack was rather underwhelming, especially for the price of admission. Now comes the latest downloadable content for TRU known as Lara's Shadow, which promises to put players into the boots of the mysterious doppelganger that Lara faced off against in Underworld. Unlike the first DLC missions, Lara's Shadow provides fast paced action, larger environments and more traps to test your exploratory skills, which should be much more satisfying to Tomb Raider fans.
First, a quick spoiler word of warning, especially if you haven't finished up Underworld: Lara's Shadow picks up very close to the end, as Lara's doppelganger, who has caused a large amount of trouble in the game, is tossed into a pit by Amanda Evert. Of course, the doppelganger isn't actually dead, and manages to escape to fight another day, attempting to seek revenge on Lara. While I won't spoil the specific plot details of Lara's Shadow, I will mention that the DLC manages to tie together specific moments of the original game and key scenes from Beneath the Ashes to provide a certain amount of insight into the evil twin's personality.
While it could've gone a bit further, it is good to get a sense of its motivations and even its humor. It also manages to make Lara's double incredibly appealing to play as, particularly due to her powers and skills, which places a brand new twist on the tomb raiding formula. It's so good to be bad. Unlike Lara, who relied primarily on firepower to eliminate enemies, the double relies much more on hand to hand combat.
While it does have twin pistols like Lara, the primary attacks for it reside much more in punches and kicks that take advantage of the creature's superhuman speed, agility and strength. This can be further augmented by pressing and holding in either bumper, which triggers what's known as Shadow Power, a 'bullet time' which boosts the force of these blows significantly. This will add special moves to your repertoire, such as a charging punch that can knock enemies off their feet and a spinning kick that can eliminate enemies that surround you. This is a significant difference from Beneath the Ashes, because the focus of combat is close to half of the experience. You'll frequently face off against three or more thralls, including the large 'cave troll' variety, and have to fend them all off at the same time, retreating to regenerate health if you take too much damage.
Fortunately, with the boosting abilities of Shadow Power (which replaces the focus meter for Lara and regenerates quickly), the doppelganger will (and should) be able to eliminate these beasts with ease. However, Shadow Power has other uses that simply augmenting your attacks.
By triggering it near cracked walls, the twin can scale sheer walls and significantly expand your leaping range. What's more, Lara's double moves much faster than ever before, such as sliding along ledges or running through hallways, which is necessary, because the traps and puzzles that she'll face are much more hazardous than before, many of which couldn't be traversable without this special power.
In fact, the doppelganger will run through some of the largest rooms and areas that have ever been included in Underworld. As a result, you'll find yourself exploring much more of your surroundings trying to figure out the best way to progress. At times, this can be complicated, primarily because some of the jumps that you'll need to make can be hidden, and while the camera has been improved for Lara's Shadow to help you see certain areas you need to get to, it can still be a bit tricky to tell where you need to go. That being said, you'll have to balance your use of Shadow Power to ensure that you can clear longer puzzle areas, because some of them require that you have a full gauge to even have a chance at survival. Prepare to scale some serious heights in this DLC. It may be strange to say, but the inclusion of the Shadow Power manages to infuse Lara's Shadow with a larger sense of exploration and experimentation than Underworld does.
It only takes a minute or two to get up to speed with the controls, and after that, you'll find yourself trying to leap across areas without using some of the ledges or clearing walls with minimal usage of Shadow Power. Not only does this foster that spirit of experimenting with your skills, it'll even provide a certain impetus to try speed runs within the game as you try to race through levels as quickly as possible. This drives a larger sense of replayability, even with the fact that you will find yourself going through the same environments twice (albeit with harder traps the second time around). Add in the fact that there's a minimal hint system (much less than what was included in Beneath the Ashes) and you'll find a certain amount of challenge that will definitely keep you coming back.
Be aware, however, if you were expecting a long amount of time in the evil twin's shoes that you won't find it here. The expansion, like the one that came before it, is still very short, which you'll have to weigh for the price of 800 Microsoft points, or about 10 bucks. It'll still run around 2 hours for those players that are somewhat accustomed to Tomb Raider games, but like I just said, the powers of the Doppelganger will provide a certain level of replayability to extend the fun of this pack. At least the ending of this pack is satisfying and for those players that have completed the console game and perhaps Beneath the Ashes, provides a nice close for the DLC. The larger question, now that Lara and her twin have had their own adventures, will be whether or not they'll team together to face some new enemy in a third pack, or whether that'll have to wait till a new Tomb Raider game. • 8 Presentation Weaving together the Underworld and Beneath the Ashes storylines into a cohesive plot, Lara’s Shadow gives an interesting twist to a little understood villain.
• 8 Graphics While the visuals are the same as those from Underworld, the sense of scale when exploring is truly incredible. • 7.5 Sound There is very little dialogue spoken by the doppelganger or other characters, and apart from that, much of it is repurposed from previous cutscenes from the game. • 8 Gameplay With a larger focus on combat and exploration, Lara’s Shadow feels like a return to classic Tomb Raider play elements. • 8 Lasting Appeal Although short, you’ll probably find yourself returning to try speed runs or see if there are different ways to improve on your time with impromptu time trials.
